Culture Minister Calls For Age Ratings Consensus
05 Sep 2008 by Tamer AsfahaniThe games industry has today responded to government calls identify more effectively the classification of games.
Culture Minister, Margaret Hodge, was discussing the findings of the Byron report accepting the report and reiterating it to the industry saying that the industry had to take responsibility to “understand the principles that underpinned her recommendations around classification.”
Funnily enough, the gaming industry’s big players are united, stating that the PEGI system is the one of choice.
Speaking of the PEGI, this is what industry big boys had to say: “Favoured by Nintendo,” David Yarnton, UK general manager Nintendo.
“A ratings system which can keep up and flex with this rapidly growing and evolving entertainment medium. I believe PEGI is the system to do this,” Codemasters Online VP and GM David Scolari.
“PEGI fits the bill in terms of its approach and delivery, it just needs some legal teeth in the UK to make it the obvious choice over and above all other options,” were the thoughts of Andy Payne, chairman of Mastertonic.
So the government has had it’s response, what action will be taken? I’m guessing nothing. But I am a cynic.
Or should that be realist…?
