Woman Fined £16,000 For Game Piracy

A British woman has been fined £16,000 for illegally downloading a Topware Interactive game from a file-sharing website.

The woman was ordered to pay £6,000 in damages and £10,000 in costs and disbursements to Topware Interactive for downloading Dream Pinball 3D.

The case, heard at the Patents County Court in London, follows another piracy hearing last month, in which Topware won a court action against four individuals who uploaded Dream Pinball 3D to a file-sharing site.

The company's lawyer, Davenport Lyons, stressed its fight against piracy was not over. The solicitor has launched civil actions against 100 people suspected of uploading copyrighted Topware Interactive IP.

"The damages and costs ordered by the court are significant and should act as a deterrent" said Davenport Lyons' David Gore. "This shows that taking direct steps against infringers is an important and effective weapon in the battle against online piracy."
